The moral abortion phenomenon, explained.

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

So goes the common argument against gun control.

This is true. Not only will most violent criminals not adhere to any confiscation or buyback schemes, but previously law abiding citizens who resist will also become outlaws. The former will still be seen as violent criminals, but the latter will be seen by many as taking a moral stand.

When guns are outlawed, they will say, the only moral gun is my gun.

However, the latter group is also less likely to want to strip gun rights from anyone, giving their moral argument a leg to stand on.

When abortion is outlawed, only outlaws will seek abortions.

The poor and the middle class will seek them outside of the system. Dangerous so-called “back alley” abortions and home remedies. These women will risk their own health and safety, as well as legal repercussions.

However, the rich and powerful will always have access to safe abortions. Whether that involves secretly paying off a doctor or travel to Canada or another country where abortion remains legal, they can always…
