The big overshot with the illiberal fascist wing of conservatism is that an overwhelming number of their perceived allies aren't fascists. They're conservative liberals who would turn on the fascists as soon as the fascists inevitably crack down on their freedoms. This is why it is important to remind these folks that liberal isn't a slur.
