"People not trained to use a gun correctly should not have one."

In principle, I think most would agree with this. I am a gun owner, and in priciple, certainly agree with it.

However, only eight US states require training prior to purchasing a firearm. In all others, one can walk into a gun shop having never fired one in their lives and as long as they pass the backgound check, can own a firearm either same day or after a brief waiting period. The reason for this is that most states consider a training requirement (which also costs the potential gun owner time and money) to be an undue barrier to a constitutional right.

I guess that deserves further discussion. How do we balance public safety against burdens to rights? I would be in favor of states offering free training, but that still requires time, which is often at a premium for those who might need a firearm for self defense the most - working class, lower income individuals.
